AMMALIFE

Partnership established 2022

The Mac Bevan Charitable Trust is proud to have supported the EMOTIVE Study in partnership with Ammalife, the results of which have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Postpartum haemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide, resulting in 70,000 deaths each year - mostly in low and middle income countries - the equivalent of one woman dying every six minutes.

This landmark research programme involved over 200,000 women living in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania aiming to reduce the negative effects of postpartum haemorrhage.

The study found that using a simple low-cost device to measure blood loss and bundling together World Health Organisation recommended treatments - rather than offering them sequentially - reduced severe bleeding by 60%.

Our support helped to pay for 10,000 doses of Tranexamic Acid, a low-cost drug which promotes blood clotting and is an important part of the Emotive treatment bundle.

This new approach, which can be performed by midwives has the potential to save thousands of women's lives globally each year.
